Time Tracking v7

by Sebastian on 20 February 2012

After a year and a half of huge gains from time tracking, I got away from the habit. The last time I tracked my time was 19th November 2011 – almost exactly 3 months ago.

Around that time, I started working 17 to 20 hours per day. I know people often exaggerate their hours, but I’m not doing so – I was working basically every minute of the day, and sleeping on the couch in my office.

With that sort of frenzied high-purpose action, and with a fluid set of actions of hiring/managing at the same time, I got away from tracking. The action dictated itself; there was no need to try to control or refine it.

Now, two of my big campaigns have stabilized and will largely run themselves, though they’ll need constant balancing and looking-after. Also I note that I’ve been spending relatively too much time on firefighting, and not enough following up with people on my side.

So, I’m back on tracking. I added some elements to the new sheet

I like it, I just started my own time tracking version… but may I ask, where is “time tracking” on this sheet? how long does it take you to fill that form? I suppose you get good at it after a while, mine is tacking me more time than it saves at the moment…

what does “make a request of my subconscious” mean?

I am not a Sebastian, but…

Our brains are immensely layered and complex. Many people, myself included, believe that by meditating on something your higher, conscious mind would like, it helps send that message down the ladder to the many subconscious layers.

Especially if you want something internal, like the courage to make a bold move, or the willpower to change a habit, I find meditating on it before sleep to be hugely effective. But even external things, I want to improve my relationship with my girlfriend, I want to spend less time on distractions, I want to be rich, I’ve also found to be effective, FWIW.

Sounds a remarkably lot like prayer, eh? Turns out, effective habits survive, and the rationalization is usually an afterthought anyway. :)

Gerard,

Sebastian details the ‘make a request of my subconscious’ point in an earlier post: http://www.sebastianmarshall.com/what-gets-measured-gets-managed

Why iconography? Unless you mean it in the less pure sense of studying historical figures…

First time comment here. Just wanted to say thanks for all the awesome posts you write here, and especially for the time tracking posts. I’ve started to track my time 4 months ago, and it helps to start my day. I still have difficulties to be regularly tracking though.

I’m going to adapt this. Thanks for posting. Do you use any specific program for tracking time or just write it down as you go? Ever tried the Pomodoro technique with this?

Isn’t this method a bit old school? I mean it’s nice to have things written down, but wouldn’t is be faster just to use an automatic tracking system?

I do loads of stuff (like you) everyday so I use programs like http://www.paymo.biz and just draw the line at the end of the day. Just my 2 cents :)

Hey Seb,

If you realize that you spend too much time firefighting, you might want to take a look at this book if you haven’t done so already:

Work The System

It addresses exactly that: how to turn a business that spends a lot of time firefighting into a highly profitable & smooth-running business.

http://www.amazon.com/Work-System-Simple-Mechanics-Working/dp/160832253X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330099987&sr=8-1

It’s a bit like the E-Myth and The Personal MBA. Very business-oriented, yet simple. It explains how to be running a profitable business by using an awesome Systems Mindset.
